Tequesta FL

The Village of Tequesta has been a secret until recent years as more and more famous residents move to the Village of Tequesta and nearby Jupiter Inlet Colony and Jupiter Island. Tequesta, named after Tequesta Indians, is the northernmost village in Palm Beach County and located just north of the historic Jupiter Lighthouse. About 75% of Tequesta is located in Palm Beach County and 25% of Tequesta is located in Martin County – including Coral Cove Park, our Jupiter Island beach across the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) from mainland Tequesta.

Tequesta was founded in late 1950’s by Charles “Punch” Martyn, III around Tequesta Country Club golf course. The first wealthy Tequesta homeowners lived by the the beach in Jupiter Inlet Colony, played golf at Tequesta Country Club and hunted at The Hunt Club (now Turtle Creek). Turtle Creek.

Jonathan Dickinson State Park

The State Park is located between Tequesta and Hobe Sound with bicycling, boating, canoeing, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, kayaking, picnicking, swimming, camping and natural wildlife.

Jonathan Dickinson was a Quaker merchant who was shipwrecked in 1696 off the Jupiter Florida. In the 1930’s, ‘the Wildman of the Loxahatchee’ Trapper Nelson homesteaded on the Loxahatchee River banks. By the 1940’s, his camp included 1,000 buildings with 6,000 soldiers but most of them have been torn down. His homestead can still be visited today by boat or kayak.

Loxahatchee River

Tequesta is located on the north side of The Loxahatchee River which winds through freshwater creeks and brackish estuaries to Jupiter Inlet and the Atlantic Ocean. Loxahatchee riverfront homes have become extremely popular and sought after Jupiter waterfront homes with sunrise or sunset views across the designated “Wild and Scenic River”. Riverfront communities include Islands of Jupiter, Pennock Point, Tequesta Country Club and River Ridge.

Tequesta Restaurants

We can recommend upscale Tequesta restaurants – Krave or Evo, casual Tequesta seafood restaurants – Hog Snappers and favorite restaurant Tequesta offers serving Mexican – Rancho Chico or Papichulo, American, Caribbean, Irish, Italian, French or Thai restaurants in Tequesta. Tequesta restaurants offer a variety to choose from for breakfast, lunch, happy hour and dinner.

IS THE TEQUESTA AN INDIAN TRIBE?
Yes, the Tequesta (aka Tekesta) Indians lived in what’s today Palm Beach, Broward and Dade Counties. To the north were the Jaega (aka Jobe) Indians as in the town of Hobe Sound. To the west were the Calusa (aka Caloosa) Indians. Juan Ponce de León was the first European to encounter the Tequesta in 1513. The Tequesta Indians lived off deer, manatees, alligators, fish, shellfish and plants.

WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF TEQUESTA?
It sounds incredible but Tequesta is the result of one man’s vision. Charles Martyn visited Tequesta in 1955, bought 86 acres of land and developed what became Jupiter Inlet Colony. His crew found a Tequesta Indian mound of artifacts on the Jaega Indian land. Thus he named his second local development Tequesta Country Club. The average age of Tequesta residents has dropped dramatically in the 14 years that I have lived here. It has become a place where more and more parents want to raise their children. It’s a village for all ages with more and more restaurants and things to do.

ARE THERE ANY SCHOOLS IN TEQUESTA?
There are two private pre-schools and lower level schools but no public schools. First Presbytarian Church offers pre-school and Good Shepherd Episcopal Church offers pre-school and elementary school (K-6th grade).

Schools Tequesta - Family moving

PALM BEACH COUNTY SCHOOLS – Most of Tequesta belongs to the Jupiter school district – Jupiter Elementary or Limestone Creek Elementary, Jupiter Middle School and Jupiter Community High School.

MARTIN COUNTY SCHOOLS – A small part of Tequesta belongs to the Hobe Sound school district with Hobe Sound Elementary, Murray Middle School and South Fork High School.
