PADDLE BOARD – Whether you just want to go paddle boarding for the day, take a lesson or sign up for paddle yoga – it is all accessible around Jupiter Inlet there are several places on the Intracoastal and on US1 south of DuBois Park that can get you set up to explore the interior Jupiter Inlet lagoons, Loxahatchee River with wildlife and the Jupiter sandbar, the Tequesta Intracoastal sandbar and of course the ocean. Individual and group paddling available.
Paddleboarding also known as stand up paddle surfing (SUP), stand up paddle boarding or ‘Hoe he’e nalu’ in Hawaiian uses paddles to move ahead. It is an ancient form of surfing that has become popular again as a way to travel long distances on a long surf board. It is easy to learn and offers a great workout. Amateurs often start by kneeling on the board which is slightly wider than a standard surfboard.
River paddle boarding is becoming popular as it requires skill and agility to navigate. It is a fun surfing sport that doesn’t rely on high or low tides.
It is very popular in Jupiter and Tequesta around the Jupiter Inlet both on the Intracoastal and Loxahatchee River and even on the ocean for advanced paddlers.

Tequesta FL
The Village of Tequesta has been a secret until recent years as more and more famous residents move to the Village of Tequesta and nearby Jupiter Inlet Colony and Jupiter Island. Tequesta, named after Tequesta Indians, is the northernmost village in Palm Beach County and located just north of the historic Jupiter Lighthouse. About 75% of Tequesta is located in Palm Beach County and 25% of Tequesta is located in Martin County – including Coral Cove Park, our Jupiter Island beach across the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) from mainland Tequesta.
Tequesta was founded in late 1950’s by Charles “Punch” Martyn, III around Tequesta Country Club golf course. The first wealthy Tequesta homeowners lived by the the beach in Jupiter Inlet Colony, played golf at Tequesta Country Club and hunted at The Hunt Club (now Turtle Creek). Turtle Creek.
Jonathan Dickinson State Park
The State Park is located between Tequesta and Hobe Sound with bicycling, boating, canoeing, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, kayaking, picnicking, swimming, camping and natural wildlife.
Jonathan Dickinson was a Quaker merchant who was shipwrecked in 1696 off the Jupiter Florida. In the 1930’s, ‘the Wildman of the Loxahatchee’ Trapper Nelson homesteaded on the Loxahatchee River banks. By the 1940’s, his camp included 1,000 buildings with 6,000 soldiers but most of them have been torn down. His homestead can still be visited today by boat or kayak.

Tequesta is located on the north side of The Loxahatchee River which winds through freshwater creeks and brackish estuaries to Jupiter Inlet and the Atlantic Ocean. Loxahatchee riverfront homes have become extremely popular and sought after Jupiter waterfront homes with sunrise or sunset views across the designated “Wild and Scenic River”. Riverfront communities include Islands of Jupiter, Pennock Point, Tequesta Country Club and River Ridge.

Kayaking Jupiter Florida
KAYAK – to kayak or canoe is very popular on local waterways. Jupiter and Tequesta are located on the Loxahatchee River by Jupiter Inlet. The Loxahatchee River is one of only two nationally recognized Wild and Scenic Rivers in Florida. The second one is Wekiva River in Central Florida – north of Orlando.
There are both public and private places to launch kayaks along the Loxahatchee River. Waterfront communities like Tequesta Country Club have neighborhood launch locations for kayaking. Kayakers also enjoy the turquoise waters of the Intracoastal and Atlantic Ocean. The average water temperature is around 85° F (26° C).
Jonathan Dickinson State Park, Tequesta/Hobe Sound– Located on the north end of the Loxahatchee River and accessible from the water or by car from US1 in Tequesta. Follow the mangrove up the river to see wildlife such as alligators, deer, bobcat, coyotes, wild boar, manatees, turtles, tortoises, herons, egrets, ospreys, bald eagles and fish. Trapper Nelson’s cabin is along this fork of the river with picnic tables and restrooms.
Riverbend Park, Jupiter – Located west of I-95 & Florida Turnpike at Indiantown Road. Canoe and kayak outfitters onsite. Famous for the thrilling ride over the Masten Dam. Onsite outfitters rent canoes and kayaks but are closed Tuesday & Wednesdays. The most popular trip from River Bend is a 2.5-3.5 miles trip (3-4 hours) called the Cypress Canopy. No swimming allowed. If you prefer you can rent biked and go biking along the Riverbend Park trails.
Intracoastal (ICW), Jupiter/Tequesta – Jupiter Lighthouse Park, US1 in Tequesta and Coral Cove Park on Jupiter Island are public launch sites to access Jupiter Inlet and Intracoastal sandbars.

It shows slow speed and minimum wake areas on the Loxahatchee River November 15th – March 31st for boating safety and manatee protection. The golf course was originally designed by golf architect Robert von Hagge – who has designed 40+ golf courses including the Admirals Cove golf courses in Jupiter Florida. ATHLETIC LEAGUES – Visit Jupiter Tequesta Athletic Association (JTAA) for junior sports league seasons. Travel and rec level sports at various age levels.
Jupiter Tequesta Athletic Association – Youth sports offered include baseball, basketball, cheer leading, flag football, lacrosse, roller hockey, rugby, soccer, softball, tackle football, travel basketball, travel soccer, travel volleyball & volleyball. Most sports are seasonal so check the website for details including registration deadlines which are usually several months in advance. The playing fields are on land parcels in Jupiter, Tequesta and Jupiter Farms.
Volunteer coaches, parent coaches, trainers and sponsors are always in high demand.

KITE SURFING – This has become so popular that a section of our beach is referred to as Kite Beach. The coastal shoreline intertwined as Juno Beach and Jupiter Beach in Florida has been a hangout for surfers, windsurfers and kitesurfers for over 50 years. This geographical location is superior for beginning and advanced kite boarding. The windiest months are September – May. Several outfitters in Jupiter and Juno Beach along US1 offer kitesurfing lessons and equipment rentals or purchase. The outfitters keep on popping up. Jupiter hosts Jupiter Kite Invasion – an annual freestyle and surf style kitesurfing competition. There is also Girls Surfing events organized by local surf shops. With the Gulf Stream just off shore the ocean maintains a water temperature of around 78° F (26 °C) year-around. Free parking, picnic areas, restrooms, fishing piers and restaurants available within walking distance.

We decided to live in the quiet Village of Tequesta with 3 minute drive to Jupiter and Jupiter Island beaches and 15 minutes to Palm Beach Gardens restaurants and shops. I think that’s probably a good starting point in your search. Other people may opt for 3 minutes to a school or a golf course and 15 minutes to the beach. It’s all up to your lifestyle, budget and priorities. Here’s my overview of nearby communities –
Palm Beach Gardens (City) – Many great restaurants, shops, public and private golf courses, 15 min from PBI airport and Singer Island, Juno Beach and Jupiter beaches. New outdoor walking and cycling project “The Riverwalk” underb way with shops, restaurants and mini ferry stops. Harbourside Place – new Intracoastal waterfront restaurant and shopping complex opened in December 2014. Now home of “The Woods Jupiter” – Tiger Woods’ restaurant. About to happen is the new Jupiter Village – a restaurant and shopping district connected to Jupiter Riverwalk. Did you know Jupiter was voted 9 of top 10 Seaside Villages in Coastal Living magazine in 2012? Jupiter and Tequesta are also home to many golf course communities.
Tequesta (Village) – North of Jupiter Inlet. Includes south end of Jupiter Island. The Village hosts a green market in season. Probably 15 restaurants and some small shops. 5-10 min drive to I-95 and Jupiter. 15 min to Palm Beach Gardens shops and restaurants. Locals enjoy fishing, golfing, boating, tennis, paddle boarding and kayaking. No thru traffic as Jonathan Dickinson State Park separates Tequesta from Hobe Sound. Small sections of Tequesta and Jupiter are in Martin County.

My Issue with Zillow
Zillow is a popular tool for buyers and sellers searching online to find the value of a particular property. If all homes were built by the same builder and of the same quality that may be the perfect tool. As with any electronic or general comparison tool that is not done ‘by-hand’ I have found that it has issues and shortcomings (but then people do too)…..
What do I mean with that? As a licensed Jupiter Florida real estate agent, I was creating a comparable market analysis (CMA) for a buyer of a single family home in Tequesta, Florida. There were several recent comps in the multiple listing service (MLS). I looked further into the tax records and saw that another property had sold privately. The home that had sold privately appeared to be owned by two individuals who were probably related. Each owner already owned half the home so when one of them bought the other one out the price was recorded as 50% of the home value. That home was then a comparison for future sales on Zillow, via the tax records and other automated systems. I am not for or against Zillow or similar companies in any way. This is simply an observation of what can happen when relying on automated tools and not real people.

Lotus was one of the first Tequesta restaurants I went to when we moved here in 2003. It is a family operated business that has been here for 20 years – at the Tequesta Shoppes Plaza – 137 N Us Hwy 1, Tequesta Florida. The interior used to be very sparse so we only did take-out for many years.
Now, the Thai restaurant has been taken over by a younger generation who have made the interior ‘funky and fun’. They still offer high quality Thai food and have added modern Japanese food.
Jupiter Inlet Colony Jupiter Island Beach homes
Exclusive private beach town north of Jupiter Inlet & east of the Intracoastal with 230 single family homes on 128 acres. All residents have less than 3 blocks to the beach or a beach access path -a very friendly & secure community with private town hall, police station, JIC Yacht Club & Marina and the casual Jupiter Inlet Beach Club with tennis courts.
The Jupiter Inlet Colony beach is not private but there is no street parking allowed. For the public to access this Jupiter Island unguarded beach, park at Coral Cove Park guarded beach on Beach Road in Tequesta & walk south along the beach to Jupiter Inlet Colony to see turtles, turtle nests, dolphins, manatees, boating, surfing and fishing.

Golf is not new here, some Palm Beach County golf courses date back to the 1920’s when players had to get here by train and boat. Local News – Tequesta FL: The seasonal Tequesta Green Market is launching its third season.
Starting October 19th, 2013 the Tequesta Green Market will be open the 3rd Saturday of every month 9am – 1pm until April, 2014.
This photo was taken last spring at the Green Market in Constitution Park in the heart of Tequesta.
Take US Highway 1 north of Jupiter Lighthouse turn west onto Tequesta Drive. The market is just past Seabrook Rd.
It will feature live music, gourmet foods, fresh local produce and healthy lifestyle products.
